Into the Community

September 21, 2006 :: No. 25/ps

What: How students and professors apply classroom course work to serve and improve the communities around them is the focus of a daylong conference on community engagement at Cal State Fullerton. Their thousands of hours of service for the benefit of children, the elderly, the poor and disabled provide real-world examples for "Engagement Through the Disciplines."
When:

Friday, Sept. 22
9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Where: Titan Student Union
Who: Andrew Furco, founding director of UC Berkeley’s Service-Learning Research and Development Center and the conference keynote speaker, will address “Community Engagement in Higher Education: Key Issues and Strategies for Building an Engaged Campus” at 9 a.m. in the Titan Theatre. Curtis L. DeBerg, professor of accounting and management information systems at CSU, Chico, will conduct a 1:30-2:30 p.m. workshop spotlighting “Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship.”
Partnerships

Among the collaborative efforts to be highlighted during conference sessions are the eight-year partnership between the Department of Child and Adolescent Studies and Richman Elementary School in Fullerton, plus a community outreach project in west Fullerton developed and implemented by students enrolled in the Department of Human Communication Studies course “Communication in Community Building and Civic Engagement.”

In addition, integrated marketing communication projects of business majors assisting Goodwill Industries, the Council on Aging of Orange County and Healing Odyssey will be examined.

Why: The purpose of the conference is to highlight the work of faculty members, students and community partners in building partnerships through academic internships, service-learning, civic engagement and other forms of community engagement.
Additional:

Among topics to be explored during the day’s workshops and breakout sessions: civic engagement in nursing, service-learning in African-American thought, student learning outcomes in international settings, community involvement as a scholarly pursuit and maximizing the college experience by joining AmeriCorps. The service-learning associated with Project SHINE (Students Helping in the Naturalization of Elders), with the efforts of graduate students in the TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Program, with the Jumpstart Program and with the university’s Center for the Promotion of Healthy Lifestyles and Obesity Prevention also will be showcased.
