Pacific Islander Resource Centers

What: Cal State Fullerton's Asian American Studies Program is hosting a daylong conference "Crossroads: Pathways to Successful Asian and Pacific Islander Resource Centers."

Details:

The focus of the event is to provide information about centers that serve Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. Cal State Fullerton is considering opening such a center on campus, said Craig Ihara, coordinator of CSUF's Asian American Studies Program.

Keynote Speaker: Evelyn Hu-DeHart, director of the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America at Brown University.
Schedule:

9 a.m.: Welcome remarks

9:15 – 10:15 a.m.: Keynote Address: "Resource Centers and Ethnic Studies" by Evelyn Hu-DeHart

10:30 a.m. – noon: Panel discussion, "Models of Resource Centers: Histories
of Challenge and Success," with Gregory Yee Mark, chair of Sacramento State's ethnic studies; Daren Mooko, associate dean and director of Pomona College's Asian American Resource Center; DonNakanishi, director of UCLA's Asian American Studies Center; and Frederick Smith, interim director of Cal State Los Angeles' Cross-Cultural Centers. Moderator: Evelyn Hu-DeHart


Noon to 1 p.m.: Lunch in the Garden Cafe


12:30 –1:30 p.m.: Gabrielino Room, Orange County Community-Based
Organization Showcase. Asian Pacific Islander community organizations will be staffing booths, providing information about their work.

1:30 – 3 p.m.: Panel discussion, "Resource Centers and Unmet Needs," with
Mary Anne Foo, executive director of Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community Alliance; Trish Gutierrez, Cal State Fullerton student and president of Hip-Hop Congress; Oiyan Anita Poon, UCLA graduate student and former UC Davis Student Affairs officer; Carol Q. Vu, CSUF alumna. Moderator: Sora Park Tanjasiri, CSUF associate professor of health science

3:15 – 4:45 Panel discussion, "Challenges/Lessons Learned from Running a
Resource Center," with Sefa Aina, associate director of Pomona College's Asian American Resource Center; Evelyn Hu-DeHart; Dora Lee, senior coordinator of Cal Poly Pomona's Office of Student Life and Cultural Centers; and Stephanie Velasco, director of Pitzer College's Center for Asian Pacific American Students. Moderator: Craig Ihara, emeritus professor of philosophy.
