Background:

Written in 1980, James Leonard won the American College Theatre Festival competition with The Diviners. An instant hit, the play was staged at New York’s Circle Repertory Company. Leonard has received the Dramatists Guild New Play Award, two New York Villager Awards, and three National Endowment for the Arts Playwriting Fellowships.

The Diviners
focuses on a 14-year-old boy named Buddy who was mentally impaired when he nearly drowned as a toddler in an accident that killed his mother. The tragedy yields two results: Buddy is mortally afraid of water, but he now has the gift of divining water. Buddy befriends the story’s other diviner, C.C. Showers, a preacher from Kentucky burned out on preaching. Through their friendship, Buddy finds salvation, and Showers heals his wounds.

Director Patrick Pearson says of the play, “this show is a beautiful exploration of the importance of faith, friendship and community at a time when hope was fading fast – the Great Depression.” Pearson was recently named Outstanding Student Director for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Region 8.  In April he will travel to Washington DC to represent Cal State Fullerton as well as Region 8 in the national festival at the Kennedy Center.

Jennifer Komar is the scenic designer, Renee Duron is the costume designer, Katy Streeter is the lighting designer, Megan Evers is the make-up designer, and the sound designer is Darcy Wood.
