Cal State Fullerton Names Conference Room
In Honor of Founding Dean, Outstanding Professor
McCarthy Hall conference room named
after Giles T. Brown.
March 2, 2006 :: No. 151
Cal State Fullerton has honored one of its
founding deans by naming Room 103F in McCarthy Hall the Beth
and Giles T. Brown Conference Room.
Brown served the
university as a faculty member and administrator for 23 years
before his retirement in 1983.
“Giles has
always been very collegial and has great respect for the
role of faculty in the governance of the university,” said
John W. Bedell, professor of sociology and chair of the Academic
Senate, which saluted Brown in December with a resolution
and commendation. “Giles loves this institution.”
Brown
joined the university in 1960 as chair and professor of history,
as well as chair of the then-Division of Social Sciences.
His dedication to teaching was recognized in 1966 when he
was named Outstanding Professor, the university’s highest
faculty honor.
In
1967, Brown assumed the new post of dean of graduate studies.
Two years later, that position was consolidated with associate
vice president for academic programs, and Brown was appointed
to the expanded role.
In 1981, in recognition
of his service in graduate studies — including the
development of 29 of the 39 master’s degree programs
offered on campus at the time — Cal
State Fullerton awarded the first Giles T. Brown Outstanding
Master’s
Degree Thesis Award. It is an honor the university bestows
each year at commencement.
Brown
retired in 1983 as emeritus associate vice president for academic
programs and graduate studies and professor of history. Since
then, he has continued his support of the campus and its students.
The Newport Beach resident established the Giles T. Brown Endowment
for Graduate Studies and is an ongoing contributor to the fund.
