Stock Market Simulation Offered to High School Students

Feb. 15, 2006 :: No. 133

What: Southland high school students will learn the fundamentals of finance and investment through stock market simulations offered by Cal State Fullerton.
Who: Center for Economic Education, under the direction of Chiara Gratton-Lavoie.
When: The next session begins Monday, Feb. 27.
Background:

The 10-week program, offered by the center since 1993, calls for students to work in teams, researching, investing and managing a $100,000 portfolio. "As participants develop their portfolio strategies, they gain knowledge of how financial markets work. They learn a great deal about the stock market and the economy," said director Gratton-Lavoie, who teaches economics.

Fall 2005 winners: Carter Greenbaum of Tarbut V. Torah, Irvine; Alex Elkins, Eric Avalos and Truong Do of Katella High School, Anaheim; and Channing Grillo, Amanda Trojan, Kevin Tripp and Donne Geer of Los Alamitos High School, Los Alamitos.

The Center for Economic Education is part of Cal State Fullerton's College of Business and Economics. Its purpose is to provide technical education services to improve the level of economic understanding in grades K-12, institutions of higher education and the surrounding community. In addition to the stock market simulation, the center offers consultations and workshops.
