University Librarian to Study Libraries Throughout Asia

July 21, 2005 :: No. 7

To better understand the research needs of international students, as well as equip Cal State Fullerton students studying abroad, librarian John Hickok is embarking on a yearlong sabbatical to visit universities throughout Asia to assess their libraries. His agenda includes a review of conditions, services and holdings.

The Northridge resident departs July 28 for Indonesia, where he will spend the month of August. The remainder of his itinerary is as follows: Philippines in September; Singapore and Malaysia, October; Thailand, November; Myanmar and Laos, December; Cambodia, January; Vietnam, February; China, March; Mongolia, April; Korea, May; Japan, June; and Taiwan, July.

Among Hickok’s projects when he returns will be: a booklet that would provide students planning to study abroad with photos and such information as what kind of services to expect and whether they’re free; specialized workshops for exchange students on the features and expectations of American libraries; and a comparative analysis of U.S. and Asian libraries.
