Equal Opportunity Is Focus of Oct. 25 Conference
Conference to focus on promoting fairness of opportunity and further elimination of discrimination in the workplace.

October 19, 2005 :: No. 52

Labor experts in law and government will gather at Cal State Fullerton Tuesday, Oct. 25, for a conference of the Southern California Regional Industry Liaison Group, which assists employers in understanding issues related to affirmative action and equal opportunity.

Cal State Fullerton is host and co-sponsor of the daylong event, “Making Progress Through the Power of Partnership,” which is designed for human resources professionals.

CSUF President Milton A. Gordon will welcome attendees to the 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. event in the Titan Student Union’s Portola Pavilion.

The conference coincides with the 40th anniversary year of President Lyndon Johnson’s Executive Order 11246 mandating equal opportunity in government employment and by its contractors, along with the establishment of programs to ensure nondiscrimination.

“Key among the topics for discussion will be the critical nature of the partnership between business and government as an important means to promote fairness of opportunity and to further the elimination of discrimination in the workplace,” said Caroline Cosgrove, disabled employees program coordinator in the university’s Office of Diversity and Equity.

Among the featured presenters will be Administrative Judge Kathleen R. Mulligan and representatives from the Department of Fair Employment and Housing, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP), including its former director, Ellen Shong. During her tenure there, Shong encouraged the formation of industry liaison groups to foster open communication between employers and the federal government. In addition to speaking in the morning, she will present an afternoon workshop on discrimination analyses.

Ron Hiraga, director of regional operations for the OFCCP, Pacific Region, is among the morning speakers scheduled to present an enforcement agency update.

Cal State Fullerton is a member of the Orange County Industry Liaison Group, which is partnering with the Greater Los Angeles and San Diego groups to present the conference and award scholarships to disabled students attending universities within their regions.

Corporate sponsors include Amgen, Boeing, Disney-ABC-Entertainment, Health Net, Honda, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Sempra Energy, Sony and Southern California Edison.

Author, lecturer and sociologist Bertice Berry is the scheduled guest presenter at noon. Her best-selling books include “I’m On My Way, But Your Foot Is On My Head” and “Redemption Song.”

A continental breakfast, lunch and reception at day’s end are included in the conference fee of $100 per person, $75 for additional attendees from the same company or agency.

Registration can be made in advance by calling 657-278-7403 or (805) 447-1999.
