Background:

In his last season before retiring, John Alexander, professor of music and director of choral studies at California State University, Fullerton, conducts the University Singers, Chamber Choir and oversees the graduate program in choral conducting. Alexander’s achievements as a masterful interpreter of the musical score have been demonstrated in his 28-year history as artistic director and conductor of one of America’s major professional choirs, the Pacific Chorale. He has also appeared as guest conductor with prestigious orchestras around the world, including L’Orchestre Lamoreaux of Paris, the St. Petersburg Chamber Orchestra, and the Shanghai Symphony among others. Alexander’s continued and outstanding achievements were recognized in 2000 with Arts Orange County’s Outstanding Individual Artist Award.

The 65-voice University Singers have toured Europe, as well as Canada, Hawaii and the United States. Directed by John Alexander, they performed with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic and last year marked the fifth consecutive season they joined the Boston Pops on their Holiday Pops concert tour. Internationally acclaimed for their exquisite musicianship, they have been invited to perform at conferences and conventions throughout the world.

The Chamber Choir, under the direction of John Alexander, is recognized as a premier collegiate vocal ensemble performing at numerous choral conventions including the American Choral Directors Association. The group has joined with the University Singers performing with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and the Pacific Symphony Orchestra among others, and in February 2003, the choir was selected as one of 42 choral ensembles to perform at the ACDA National Convention in New York presenting concerts at Riverside Church, Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall.
