Meeting to Focus on West Fullerton — Stories of Hope and
Civic Renewal
Course discussed the role of civic engagement
in local communities and decided to focus on West Fullerton.

“West Fullerton — Stories
of Hope and Civic Renewal” will be the focus of an Orange
County Civic Congress meeting scheduled for Tuesday, July
19. The program will be presented at the Orangethorpe
United Methodist Church in Fullerton from 5-7:30 p.m. and
is open to the public.
This meeting is the culminating event of Cal
State Fullerton’s spring course “Communication
in Community Building and Civic Engagement.” During
the class, students discussed the role of civic engagement
in local communities and decided to focus on West Fullerton.
They interviewed residents to discover some of the obstacles
to civic engagement, the struggles that immigrant families
face and what kinds of improvements could be beneficial to
families and neighborhoods. The interviews were videotaped,
and segments from them included in a video that will be screened
at the program.
The class worked in cooperation with the CSUF
Center for Community Dialogue, West Fullerton Improvement
Committee and the League of Women Voters.
A special guest at the event will be Lewis
Friedland, author of “Civic Innovation in America,”
the textbook used in the class. Friedland is a professor in
the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University
of Wisconsin-Madison.
In addition, awards will be presented to those
who best represent hope and civic renewal in the community.
