Constitution Day to be Commemorated
at Cal State Fullerton

September 16, 2005 :: No. 23

Cal State Fullerton will get an early start on celebrating Constitution Day with activities beginning Friday, Sept. 16 — one day ahead of the actual date the U.S. Constitution was signed, back in 1787.

Two videotaped presentations by National Public Radio will be aired Friday in the Titan Student Union’s Ontiveros Room. “Debating Free Speech in the Digital Age,” a program taped at the National Archives on censorship — in libraries, of textbooks and on the Internet — is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. NPR’s Margot Adler hosts the one-hour program.

“Conversations With the Supreme Court Justices” airs at noon, with Sandra Day O’Connor and Stephen Breyer discussing the Constitution with students at the Supreme Court.

Next week, a panel discussion featuring CSUF students and faculty members is scheduled for noon Monday, Sept. 19, in the Quad. Gordon Bakken, professor of history; Don Matthewson, lecturer in political science; and Mona Mohammadi, Associated Students Inc. president, will discuss the Supreme Court confirmation hearings, the legitimacy of the Constitution and federalism. The discussion will be moderated by Drew Wiley, ASI executive vice president. Audience members will be invited to join the dialogue.

At the forum, a limited supply of pocket-sized copies of the Constitution will be available at a Constitution Day table, where attendees also may register to vote.
