Background:

The Women's Choir is a large, 50-plus member, non-select ensemble that serves both music majors and non-majors. Under the direction of Vance D. Wolverton since 1989, the choir has performed twice for the California Music Educators Association annual conference in Ontario in 2000 and Pasadena in 2002. The evening concert offers a wide variety of repertoire, student soloists, student composers and conductors. Student soloists include- Krista Duffy, Rachel Manning, Jessica Caravella, Elizabeth Lowe, Michelle Salapski, Kimiko Wathall.

The Men's Chorus, under the direction of Robert Istad , will present a program of diverse works this spring. They offer a set of American folk songs- including arrangements by Aaron Copland and Robert Shaw/Alice Parker. They will also sing a set of German part-songs for men's chorus by Franz Schubert. The works will be performed in German to illustrate the esoteric experiences of finding inspiration in the beauty of nature. The piece, "Widerspruch" describes a contradiction; the freedom one feels in nature coupled with the insignificance the individual poses to the great expanse of earth's natural beauty. "Der Gondelfahrer" describes a lonely gondolier floating silently through early morning Venice as the chimes of St. Mark's mark the hours.
