The program features the new work, "Insects I Have Known and Loved," written by CSUF faculty composer Ken Walicki-who has had other works performed by Jazz Ensemble I, and garnered acclaim at last year's Reno Jazz Festival. Also with his hand in composing and arranging, CSUF student Tim Gill, arranged Cole Porter's "What is This Thing Called Love" for this group he performs with. "Duet" a tune by Neal Hefti, features 2 of CSUF's top jazz trumpet players Brian Mantz and Tim Gill. And also featured on the program is the popular "23º N, 82º W" by Bill Russo which was the inspiration for the classic Sinatra/Nelson Riddle tune "I've Got You Under My Skin" made famous by Stan Kenton.

Jazz Ensemble I consistently receives high scores and acclaim at major west coast jazz festivals. They have been featured on a live radio broadcast across North America as part of the Playboy Jazz Festival. Jazz Ensemble I has performed, by invitation, at many leading Southern California festivals and events.

Chuck Tumlinson director of the jazz program since 2001, has led the CSUF ensembles in appearances at the International Association of Jazz Educators Conference, at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood , and with winning results at the 2004 Reno Jazz Festival. Tumlinson has been featured soloist at several national conventions and has appeared as soloist, clinician and adjudicator throughout the country.
