Ralph L. Beckett, emeritus professor of speech communication at Cal State Fullerton and a Placentia resident, has died of cancer at the age of 81.

April 1, 2005 :: No. 163

Ralph L. Beckett, emeritus professor of speech communication at Cal State Fullerton and a Placentia resident, has died of cancer at the age of 81.

Prior to joining the CSUF faculty in 1970, he taught for two years at the University of Missouri and earned a doctorate in communicative disorders from USC.

Among Beckett’s scholarly interests were physiological phonetics and voice disorders.

“Ralph was one of the most student-oriented, nurturing faculty members I have ever known,” said Kurt Kitselman, chair and professor of human communication studies. “Ralph provided effective leadership to the communicative disorders program in the years before he retired, and he has continued to be an active supporter and friend of the department.”

Beckett died March 22; a private memorial service was held March 28. Survivors include his wife, Barbara; sons, Larry and Stephen; daughter, Carolyn; brother, Donald; nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
