Rock ‘n’ Roll on the Sunset Strip
Billboard Images Showcased in Student Union Exhibit
Rock ‘n’ Roll as reflected on billboards along the Sunset Strip is the subject of an exhibit of the work of photographer Robert Landau opening March 5 at the Titan Student Union.
“Rock ‘n’ Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip,” in the Center Gallery, presents Landau’s vision of Los Angeles through iconic rock art adapted on the larger-than-life advertisements and recalls an era when such art — showcased in the heart of LA — signaled that a musical act had “hit the big time.” Showcased are images taken from the 1960s to mid-1980s that feature such rock legends as Ted Nugent, the Bee Gees, David Bowie, Marvin Gaye, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
“Rock and roll billboards stood alone in the world of outdoor advertising with visual statements that often defied normal commercial concerns,” says Landau about the collection, which will be featured in an upcoming book this fall by Angel City Press.
As part of the exhibit’s run, campus and community members are invited to attend a free opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in Portola Pavilion C of the Titan Student Union. The event will feature a personal appearance by Landau, who will be sharing a slide show and lecture with Q-and-A to follow. Those in attendance will receive a free limited edition gallery poster featuring one of Landau’s iconic photos.
The Titan Student Union, a facility of the Associated Students Inc., coordinates an Arts & Exhibit program that provides gallery space for CSUF students and other local artists to showcase their works. Temporary art shows and other exhibits are presented year-round. In addition, the student union also features a large permanent collection of student art on display throughout the building.
