May 6 Concert Includes a Concerto for Timpani and Wind Symphony
The University Wind Symphony, under the direction of Mitchell Fennell, will perform the premier of William Kraft’s “Concerto No. 1 for Timpani and Wind Symphony” during its 8 p.m. Friday, May 6, concert in the Meng Concert Hall of the Clayes Performing Arts Center.
Featured in the performance of the Kraft piece will be Todd Miller, professor of music and principal timpanist with the Pacific Symphony. Miller also performs with other Southern California orchestras and is a studio musician who has worked on such award-winning scores as “Out of Africa,” “Dances With Wolves” and “Titanic.” Miller received the outstanding artist award at the 11th annual Orange County Arts Awards in 2010.
The Wind Ensemble also will perform Chen Yi’s “Dragon Rhyme,” “March” from Paul Hindemith’s “Symphonic Metamorphosis,” Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Festival Overture” under the direction of graduate student conductor Juan Gallegos and R. Vaughan Williams “Folk Song Suite” under the direction of graduate student conductor Michael Fleischmann.
Tickets for the performance are $10, $8 for students with ID, and may be purchased online or from the box office on the southwest corner of the Clayes Performing Arts Center.
