Weaving Knowledge
Anthropology, Arboretum Host Native American Basket Class
Campus and community members interested in learning more about Native American culture are invited to take part in a Saturday, Feb. 12, basket workshop led by artist and master weaver Abe Sanchez.
The 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. program is co-sponsored by the Fullerton Arboretum and the Department of Anthropology as part of the Arboretum’s California Indian Plant Uses Program. Participants will create a small open-twined gathering basket made of juncus textilis or basket rush.
“Native Americans have been weaving baskets with local native plants for thousands of years in what is now Orange County,” noted Ami Becker, education manager at the Arboretum. “Abe Sanchez promotes the revitalization of indigenous arts. His artistic experience as a master basket weaver has given him the opportunity to assist interested tribes and individuals in the revival of this ancient craft throughout California, Arizona and Mexico.”
Cost of the daylong program at the Arboretum is $75 for Friends of the Fullerton Arboretum and students; $90 for nonmembers, and prepaid registration is required by Feb. 7. To register and for more information, call 657-278-3407.
