Student Presentations Earn Recognition at National Meetings

Four students have walked away with honors for their scientific poster presentations at last month’s combined national Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science Conference and the national Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists Symposium in Anaheim. The dual events drew about 4,000 participants and about 85 presentations were recognized.

“It is a great achievement for our students’ research to be recognized at SACNAS,” said Robert Koch, acting dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. “But, I am not surprised. I had the privilege of visiting most of our students at the meeting to see their posters and hear their presentations. They were all remarkably well prepared and understood their research projects thoroughly.

“It was also a great opportunity for these students to attend a national meeting of this caliber, network with faculty and peers from across the country, hear presentations by experts in the field, present their work and be recognized as being among the best in the country. This is recognition of the hard work the faculty mentors and program directors put in on behalf of these students. Success like this is a direct result of close student-faculty collaborations,” he said.
