Play Delves Into Psyches of Troubled Teen, Psychologist

When a teenager commits a horrific crime, a psychologist finds himself struggling with his own demons, as well as those of his client, in the drama “Equus,” which opens Friday, Nov. 12, in the Young Theatre at Cal State Fullerton.

The play by Peter Shaffer, was awarded the Tony Award for Best Play in 1975 and has run for more than 1,000 performances. Shaffer followed Equus in 1979 with his play “Amadeus,” which also won the Tony for Best Play in 1981.

Most recently, “Equus” enjoyed award-winning revivals both on the West End of London and on Broadway in a production starring Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame. Of “Equus,” Shaffer wrote, “One weekend I was driving with a friend through the bleak countryside. We passed a stable. Suddenly he was reminded by it of an alarming crime, which he had heard about recently at a dinner party in London. He knew only one horrible detail, and his complete mention of it could barely have lasted a minute — but it was enough to arouse in me an intense fascination. …”

The play, which continues through Dec. 5, contains nudity and sexual content.

Cast includes Brian Rickel, Ryan Jones, Eva Dailey, Keiko Suda, Jason Oles, Lindsey Kelly, Michael Martinez-Hamilton, Grace Ann Murphy, Nick Waaland, Mark Bartlett, Joshua Bross, Chris Hayhurst, Blake Prentiss and Donald Russell.
