Report Seeks 'Roadmaps' To Graduation

from Dateline (February 13, 2003)

Graduation

A new California State University study is advocating the development of academic “roadmaps” to help students complete a baccalaureate degree.

The draft report recommends the development of 4-, 5- and 6-year plans to guide students in all degree programs.

“While we cannot control students' individual decisions about how they juggle the relative priorities of family, work and school, we can provide clear and accessible roadmaps to help them navigate the path to graduation,” said Jacquelyn Kegley, statewide Academic Senate chair who co-chaired the task force.

“Facilitating Student Success in Achieving the Baccalaureate Degree” was presented to the trustees last month. They will be asked to approve the final report at their March meeting.

The report urges campuses to develop projected class schedules to ensure that required courses are available during specified terms. It also calls for creation of specific checkpoints at which students would be advised on their progress to degree.
