Leon Gilbert Re-elected to Lead
Cal State Fullerton’s Academic Senate
June 05, 2003 :: No.257
Members of Cal State Fullerton’s Academic
Senate have re-elected Leon J. Gilbert, professor of modern languages
and literatures, chair of the faculty advisory body. His term of
office continues through June 2004.
“I am very gratified to be re-elected as chair
of the Academic Senate and to have that affirmation of continued
confidence in my abilities,” says Gilbert, who noted that
the state budget and its ramifications for Cal State Fullerton will
be a continuing concern in the coming year. “However, if we
work collegially, we’ll get through this, as we have done
in previous tight budget years.”
The Placentia resident has been a member of the university
faculty since 1970 and served as chair of his academic department
from 1977-83 and 1996-99. For 13 years, he served as coordinator
and associate dean for student academic affairs in the College of
Humanities and Social Sciences, and on an acting basis, directed
Freshman Programs in 2001-02 and the University Honors Program in
2000-01.
In addition, Gilbert has been the campus’s faculty
athletics representative to the NCAA since 1992 and currently is
serving a three-year term as the Big West Conference representative
on the NCAA Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet.
The educator earned his doctorate in German from the
University of Colorado and co-authored the text “Single Subject
Matter Assessment of Prospective Foreign Language Teachers: Report
of the California State University Workgroup on Assessment of Foreign
Language Teachers.” His reviews have been published by such
journals as the Modern Language Journal and German
Quarterly.
Joining Gilbert on the 2003-04 Academic Senate Executive
Committee are Fullerton residents Jack W. Bedell, chair and professor
of sociology, vice-chair; Diana W. Guerin, professor of child and
adolescent studies, secretary; and David C. Wong, professor of economics,
treasurer.
Members-at-large serving on the committee are: David
R. Fromson of Brea, professor of biological science and associate
dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics; Gerald
E. Gannon of Fullerton, professor of mathematics; and Jane V. Hall
of Laguna Beach, professor of economics.
J. Vincent Buck of Fullerton, as a statewide academic
senator, also serves on the executive committee. Buck, a professor
of political science, is one of three campus members who serve on
the CSU Academic Senate. The others are William D. Meyer of Fullerton,
professor of theatre and dance, and Barry Pasternack of Santa Ana,
chair and professor of information systems and decision sciences.
