April
Social Justice Student Summit
Students from throughout the region were on campus
April 9 for the inaugural Social Justice Student Summit, a daylong
conference on community service, civic engagement and activism.
Keynote speaker
was Congresswoman Hilda Solis (D-El Monte). “We want to open
our community’s eyes to what is going on in the world and,
more importantly, to show students and community members how they
can become involved,” said Sabrina Sanders, coordinator of
the Volunteer and Service Center, which co-sponsored the daylong
event with the Dean of Students Office. Pictured is senior women’s
studies major Katie Owen, a summit committee member and emcee for
the event, presenting an event T-shirt to Solis after her keynote
speech. Owen also is holding a certificate of special congressional
recognition that Solis presented to the students for organizing
the event.
