Students Take Top Honors in CSU Media Arts Festival
Graduate art student Matt Frantz of San Diego and
recent radio-TV-film graduate Andrew Kopjak of Dana Point placed
first in the music video and TV short-form categories, respectively,
during the CSU Media Arts Festival recently held at CSU Channel
Islands.
Frantz captured the Rosebud Award for “Billy,
Boney, and Ma,” an animated music video that follows a young
boy’s strange adventures when he accidentally unearths some
bones during a souvenir dig. Kopjak’s “Crossing Borders”
took the Rosebud Award for his documentary trailer about the journey
of five students traveling through Europe for the first time.
Both Cal State Fullerton students were presented
checks for $500; in addition, the university’s Art and Radio-TV-Film
departments each received a check for $250. This year’s festival
drew a record 210 entries from students throughout the CSU system.
The 31 finalists were selected by faculty members. Industry professionals
comprised the jury and named the winners.
The Media Arts Festival was established in 1991 to
give talented students studying film, video and interactive media
within the 23-campus CSU system an opportunity to present their
work for critical review. In 2000, the festival was expanded to
help students make the successful transition from producing their
works in college classes to working in actual film and television
industries.
