Math, Engineering and Computer Science

November 19, 2004 :: No. 89

Five community college transfer students currently in their first year at Cal State Fullerton have been awarded scholarships through a National Science Foundation program. The scholarship covers fees, books and academic support services to ensure the attainment of a four-year degree and preparation for graduate studies and/or career placement.

Recipients of the Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarships (CSEMS) — $3,125 annually — are: junior Hernan Arreola of Sylmar and senior Fabiola Gonzalez of Anaheim, both computer science majors; plus junior Luz Ramirez of Anaheim, senior Maria Robledo of Santa Ana and junior Adelberto Zambrano of Garden Grove, all mathematics majors.

Eligible recipients are transfer students in select majors and participants in the Math Engineering Science Achievement Engineering Program supported by the statewide MESA office at the University of California.

Students apply while attending community college, says Sergio A. Guerra, director of Cal State Fullerton’s MESA Engineering Program.

This fall, Cal State Fullerton was awarded $46,875 in support of the CSEMS program.

“These are academically talented students who traditionally are underrepresented in the fields of computer science, engineering and mathematics. To make ends meet, they are working full time toward an undergraduate or graduate degree. These scholarships give them financial support while they achieve their dreams,” says Guerra.

This is the fifth year that Cal State Fullerton has been involved in the CSEMS program.
