University Honors
Faculty for Dedication to Teaching
by Pamela Mclaren and Elizabeth Martin
Cal State Fullerton honored faculty members
for their dedicated years of service at a special awards ceremony
held Feb. 20 at El Dorado Ranch. Among the honorees were
two faculty members who have served with the university for 40 years:
Mildred Donoghue, professor of elementary and bilingual
education, and Jerry Samuelson, dean of the College
of the Arts and professor of art.
Donoghue joined the campus in 1962 and was heavily
involved in the development of the Elementary Education Department.
A noted author, her textbook The Child and the English Language
Arts, is now in its fifth edition. Thanks to her generosity, the
university opened the Donoghue Children's Literature Center in the
Pollak Library in spring 2001. She also has funded two scholarships
- one for students pursuing a master's degree in education with
a concentration in elementary curriculum and instruction, and the
other for continuing elementary education students pursuing a multiple-subject
credential.

as a member of the CSU Arts Advisory Council to the Chancellor in
1984 and as an adviser to the chancellor from 1985-88. He is a founding

Art Center in Santa Ana and has been a driving force for the construction
of the Performing Arts Center that breaks ground this spring.
