Background: |
The Symphonic Band, under the direction of
Marc Dickey, consists of 95 wind and percussion players. These
young musicians include music and music education majors,
and talented students from a broad range of majors across
university campus.
“The repertoire chosen for this concert,” shares
Dickey, “consists of some of the best that the modern
wind band has to offer. Of particular interest Ron Nelson’s
modern piece describing a sunrise in Hiroshima. Nelson utilizes
a variety of techniques unusual to wind repertoire including
singing, rhythmic improvisation and glissandos, to create
a stunning effect” He continues, “The concert
also features a smaller ensemble in Gordon Jacob’s contemporary
setting of quaint English folk songs for 12 players.”
Dickey came to Cal State Fullerton in 1988 as the department’s
specialist in instrumental music education. In addition to
conducting the Symphonic Band he teaches courses in the pre-credential,
credential and the graduate music education program.
Dickey was previously associate director of bands at Oregon
State University, where he conducted the Concert Band, the
OSU Marching Band, the Jazz Ensemble, and served as assistant
conductor of the Symphony Band. He has taught public school
instrumental music at all levels, and has conducted public
school and university instrumental music ensembles in Michigan,
Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Oregon, and California. Dickey
has been awarded the National Band Association's Citation
of Excellence. |
