Evolutionary Genetics
Lecture Set
for May 2
Francisco J. Ayala will present “Darwin’s
Greatest Discovery: Design Without Designer”
March 1, 2006 :: No. 149
Francisco J. Ayala, a member of the
President’s Committee
of Advisors on Science and Technology and a professor of
biological sciences and philosophy at UC Irvine, will present
a public lecture May 2 at Cal State Fullerton on “Darwin’s
Greatest Discovery: Design Without Designer.”
Sponsored
by the University Honors and Scholars Program, Ayala will
speak at 7 p.m. in the Titan Student Union’s
Portola Pavilion. A reception will follow.
Ayala, author
of the 1997 book “Genetics and the Origin of Species,” proposes
that Darwin’s theory of evolution and explanation of
design do not include or exclude considerations of divine
action in the world any more than astronomy, geology, physics
or chemistry do.
His research focuses on population and evolutionary
genetics, including the origin of species, genetic diversity
of populations, the origin of malaria, the population structure
of parasitic protozoa and the molecular clock of evolution.
He also writes about the interface between religion and science
and on philosophical issues concerning epistemology, ethics
and the philosophy of biology.
