Cal State Fullerton’s Performing Arts Center was selected for an award for education design from the Concrete Masonry Association of California and Nevada in conjunction with the American Institute of Architects California Council. The award will be presented Friday at the 2006 Concrete Masonry Design Awards Banquet in Marina del Ray. The awards program celebrates and honors achievement in the design and use of concrete masonry products.

Pfeiffer Partners Inc. of Los Angeles, which served as architect for the project, describes the center’s design as one that “creates a new signature building within the heart of the CSUF campus.”
 
Jury comments highlighted various aspects of the design: “The celebratory entrance feature articulates and strengthens the campus plan,” noted the judges. “The concrete masonry is a good juxtaposition with the glass forms. …The roof forms are quite unique and eye catching.”
           
The 102,000-square-foot structure includes the 800-seat Meng Concert Hall, home to the university’s choral and instrumental ensembles; the 250-seat, thrust-stage Young Theatre; and the McGarvey Family Dance Studio, which can accommodate instruction and performance before an audience of 50. In addition, the center also houses rehearsal, laboratory, studio and technical spaces.
           
Nabih Youssef & Associates served as structural engineer. General contractors were Kajima Construction Services for the first phase, followed by Hensel Phelps Construction Co.
