Cal State Fullerton has signed a lease with
Lennar Corp. for a second building at the university’s
Irvine Campus, which serves about 3,000 students.
The newly leased building provides more than
16,000 square feet of space for growth at the CSUF branch
campus, a fixture in south Orange County for more than 16
years — first in Mission Viejo and now adjacent to
the county’s future Great Park.
“We are delighted that this lease
has been signed, as it will enable the university to expand
course offerings and develop new programs at the Irvine
Campus,” said Judith Anderson, CSUF executive vice
president.
Lennar Corp. is the managing partner in the
entity that holds title to the land that was formerly the
El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.
Known as Building 65, the facility once served
as the administrative building for the marine base, where
Cal State Fullerton is now growing new roots. It’s
located a short walk from the campus’s first building — a
bustling hub of student activity throughout classrooms, computer
labs, a café, bookstore, library and central courtyard.
The new building’s interior will be
revamped this summer to accommodate 10 classrooms, 12 offices,
a conference room, student lounge and faculty/staff lounge.
It also will provide space for a planned Community Learning
and Literacy Center, sponsored by the College of Education,
and targeted to offer educational support and services to
the community.
“We are quite excited with how
things are progressing with the addition of this second
building,” said George Giacumakis, director of the
CSUF Irvine Campus. “I’m particularly excited
about the ability to bring in more full-time faculty members
who will help shape future academic programs that use the
Orange County Great Park as a laboratory.”
The building is expected to be ready for use
by the start of fall semester classes in August.
The CSUF Irvine Campus opened in fall 2002
to help Cal State Fullerton fulfill its mission of ensuring
accessible, affordable, quality higher education in Orange
County. Its history dates back to 1989, when the branch campus
was launched in Mission Viejo.
The CSUF Irvine Campus offers upper-division
and graduate-level courses in more than 30 majors and programs,
including teacher credential programs.
