CSUF Celebrates Constitution Day Sept. 18-19

September 7, 2006 :: No. 21

What: On-your-feet lessons about the U.S. Constitution; panel discussions on censorship, the First Amendment, civil liberties and presidential powers; a voter registration drive; fife and drum entertainment; plus conversations with Orange County Superior Court judges are featured during Cal State Fullerton’s Constitution Day festivities. All activities are open to the public free of charge.
When/Where:

Monday, Sept. 18, 8:30-11 a.m. and 6:30-8 p.m. in the Titan Student Union
Tuesday, Sept. 19, noon-1 p.m. in the Quad Cal State Fullerton, 800 N. State College Blvd., Fullerton, 92831

Highlights:

Sept. 18, 8:30-11 a.m.: “A Walk Through the Constitution” interactive exhibit created by high school students will be on display. It features 13 learning stations providing four-minute presentations on the historic document’s preamble, its seven articles and the Bill of Rights. Visitors to the exhibit will have the chance to meet and speak with Orange County Superior Court judges. Adding to the festivities will be Revolutionary War fife and drum corps re-enactors, “Uncle Sam” and patriotic music performed by the Celebration USA singers (Orange County students). Bob Heft, designer of the 50-star American flag, will deliver the keynote address.

Sept. 18, 6:30-8 p.m.: “Censorship and the Threat to a Free Society” panel discussion features Al Jerome, president and CEO of KCET-TV. He will discuss the implications of censorship on the free press, especially as it pertains to the role of broadcast media, and the current efforts of the FCC to impose national standards.

Sept. 19, noon-1 p.m.: “Contemporary Challenges Under the U.S. Constitution” panel discussion will address the First Amendment, civil liberties and presidential powers. The CSUF panelists are Rick Pullen, dean of the College of Communications and chair-elect of the California First Amendment Coalition; Max Dery, professor of criminal justice; and Scott Spitzer, assistant professor of political science.
