Cal State Fullerton’s latest
venture into affordable faculty/staff housing received the
blessing of the California State University Board of Trustees,
and construction is set to begin in early September.
In July, the CSU board approved the funding
proposal for University Heights, a planned development of
42 houses on part of the property now occupied by the Fullerton
Elks Lodge. Fullerton City Council OK’d the development
earlier in the year.
University Heights is the second faculty-staff
housing development effort of the CSUF Housing Authority,
a special- purpose auxiliary established to oversee the development
of affordable housing for the university. In 2002, the authority
completed construction of University Gables located on eight
acres at the corner of Malvern Avenue and Dale Street in Buena
Park. That development has 36 town homes and 50 detached homes.
As part of the purchase arrangement the CSUF
Housing Authority will acquire approximately three acres of
land for the new homes. In return, the Elks will receive funding
to build a new 13,000-square-foot lodge, valued at approximately
$3 million, adjacent to the University Heights neighborhood.Additionally,
the Elks will receive ongoing payments from the authority
over a 99-year period to pay for the remainder of the land’s
fair market value.
