New housing development offers affordable housing for university staff and faculty

February 18, 2005

Cal State Fullerton's proposal for University Heights, a housing development on more than three acres of property to be purchased from the Fullerton Elks Lodge, will be reviewed by the city's planning commission March 9, and if approved, go before the city council.

The proposal, which was endorsed by the city's Redevelopment Design Review Committee last week, calls for the development of 42 three-level homes, as well as a new 13,000-square-foot Elks Club lodge on property overlooking the intersection of Brea and Harbor boulevards. The 1,755 and 2,136 square-foot homes are expected to sell in the $400,000 range.

University Heights is the second property development effort of the CSUF Housing Authority, a special-purpose auxiliary established to oversee the development of affordable housing for the university. In 2002, the authority completed construction of University Gables, located on eight acres at the corner of Malvern Avenue and Dale Street in Buena Park . That development has 36 town homes and 50 detached homes.

ãWe are excited and looking forward to moving ahead on this development,ä noted Bill Dickerson, executive director of the housing authority and the CSUF Foundation. ãAs the university grows, the need for affordable housing for its faculty and staff members also grows.ä

Already, more than 250 members of the campus community have expressed interest in the project.
