Immigration Focus of
April Town Hall
Raphael Sonenshein moderates latest community
discussion: "Is Lady Liberty's Lamp Still Lit?"
April 14, 2005 :: No. 171
Immigration — from economic,
human rights and national security perspectives — is
the subject of an April 19 town hall at Cal State Fullerton.
“Is Lady Liberty’s Lamp Still Lit?”
is the theme of the 7:30 p.m. program in the Titan Student
Union’s Portola Pavilion. The event is open to the public
free of charge.
The community program, the fourth in the Issues That Divide
series sponsored by the university’s centers for Community
Dialogue and Public Policy, will be moderated by Raphael Sonenshein,
professor of political science and author of the books “The
City at Stake: Secession, Reform and the Battle for Los Angeles”
and “Politics in Black and White: Race and Power in
Los Angeles.”
“The central issue of our time, in terms
of how we live our daily lives, is probably the role that
the new generations of immigrants will play in our society
and how Americans see their role — as contributors to
or drain on society,” said Sonenshein. “Immigrants
and their children are now playing a bigger role in the politics
of both parties and will undoubtedly reshape Orange County,
California and the nation.”
Discussing the issue will be Peter Daniels,
employment services program coordinator for Catholic Charities
of Orange County; Ken Masugi, director of the Center for Local
Government at Claremont Institute; Mona Mohammadi executive
vice president of Cal State Fullerton’s Associated Students
Inc.; Edward Tabash, attorney and board member of Californians
for Population Stabilization; and Nora Vargas, director of
the Office of Immigrant Affairs for the city of Los Angeles.
