Giles T. Brown's donation to the Endowment for Graduate
Students is one of several recent gifts to the university.

Giles T. Brown, emeritus associate vice president
of academic affairs, dean of graduate studies and professor
of history, recently made his third charitable gift annuity
to the Giles T. Brown Endowment for Graduate Studies.
The
$120,000 supplemental donation will help further and enhance
the quality of graduate work through funding of grants and
visiting scholars, travel expenses for graduate students,
faculty or administrators to present papers, and payment
of page costs for publication of student research results
in journals and thesis awards. The Giles T. Brown Endowment
was created in 2002 to recognize the efforts of CSUF graduate
students in the completion of their theses.
On Thursday, Dec.
8, the Academic Senate unanimously approved a resolution
and commendation honoring Brown’s service
to the university and involvement in the community.
Brown’s
contribution is one of many recent gifts to the university
that fund colleges, departments, programs and projects. Others
include:
The Dhont Foundation’s $100,000 donation — the
organization’s second — to the Performing Arts
Center. In recognition of the gift, one of the center’s
dance studios will be named in the family’s honor.
The
College of Engineering and Computer Science received $20,000
from Boeing — $10,000 each to the Minority
Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) Engineering Program
and the Boeing Dean’s Scholarships. Boeing also gave
$27,000 to the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics
for seven student scholarships and to fund a class to prepare
pre-service elementary school teachers to teach science.
Stephen Hewitt has made the first of two gifts
to the university in honor of his father, Alfred Hewitt — former lecturer
in communications and retired editor at the Fullerton News
Tribune — and his mother, Louise. The gift is being
added to the existing Alfred and Louise Hewitt Journalism
Fund and will bring its total to $25,000 —enough to
endow a scholarship.
