Scholars Who Studied Chinese Village to Present Findings

December 1, 2005 :: No. 83

What: Members of Cal State Fullerton’s Chinese Village Oral History Project will present their findings from a summer visit to Longquan Village (Dragon Springs) in Henan Province in northern China.
When: Tuesday, Dec. 6

Background: Graduate students and faculty members from the departments of Anthropology, American Studies, History, and English, Comparative Literature and Linguistics spent three weeks in June conducting fieldwork in Longquan Village. Their presentation will focus on recent political, socioeconomic and cultural transformations there. In addition, an exhibition with photos and artifacts of the village, plus books on rural China will be on display.
Presentation Schedule:

1 p.m.  Art Hansen, director of CSUF’s Center for Oral and Public History, introduces the  project.

1:15 p.m. Laichen Sun, assistant professor of history and project coordinator, presents background on Longquan Village.

1:30 p.m. Allie Fricket, history major, presents “The Corporate Village: Economic Competition and Village Identity.”

1:45 p.m. Hansen and history major Yueh-Ying Chu present “Political Leadership, ‘Spiritual  Civilization’ and Domestic Life Within a Model Village of the New China.”             
2 p.m.  Tour of  “One Village in China” exhibit.

2:15 p.m. Tom Reins, lecturer in history, presents “Local Government in China Under Reform: The Case of Longquan, Henan Since 1978.”

2:30 p.m.  Yichin Shen, associate professor of English, comparative literature and linguistics, presents  “Changing Times, Changing Men: Longquan Men’s Perceptions of Self, Masculinity and Gender Equality.”

2:45 p.m.  Jacque Swartout, anthropology major, presents “The Changing Perspective of  Rural Women  in China: A Village Case Study.”

3 p.m. Hong Vu, American studies major, presents “Beyond Temple Building: Religious Revival in  Dragon Springs Village.”

3:15 p.m. Sun presents “The Moral World of Longquan.”

3:30 p.m. Question-and-answer session
