Background: |
In his last season before retiring, John Alexander,
professor of music and director of choral studies at
California State University, Fullerton, conducts the
University Singers, Chamber Choir and oversees the graduate
program in choral conducting. Alexander’s achievements
as a masterful interpreter of the musical score have
been demonstrated in his 28-year history as artistic
director and conductor of one of America’s major
professional choirs, the Pacific Chorale. He has also
appeared as guest conductor with prestigious orchestras
around the world, including L’Orchestre Lamoreaux
of Paris, the St. Petersburg Chamber Orchestra, and
the Shanghai Symphony among others. Alexander’s
continued and outstanding achievements were recognized
in 2000 with Arts Orange County’s Outstanding
Individual Artist Award.
The 65-voice University Singers have toured Europe,
as well as Canada, Hawaii and the United States. Directed
by John Alexander, they performed with the Hollywood
Bowl Orchestra, the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Los
Angeles Philharmonic and last year marked the fifth
consecutive season they joined the Boston Pops on their
Holiday Pops concert tour. Internationally acclaimed
for their exquisite musicianship, they have been invited
to perform at conferences and conventions throughout
the world.
The Chamber Choir, under the direction of John Alexander,
is recognized as a premier collegiate vocal ensemble
performing at numerous choral conventions including
the American Choral Directors Association. The group
has joined with the University Singers performing with
the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and the Pacific Symphony
Orchestra among others, and in February 2003, the choir
was selected as one of 42 choral ensembles to perform
at the ACDA National Convention in New York presenting
