CSUF to Take Lead in Food Distribution Drive

September 26, 2005 :: No. 31

What: Organizers from Cal State Fullerton will lead an effort to distribute food to needy families in West Fullerton. Donations will be provided by Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.
When: Saturday, Oct. 1 at 9 a.m.
Who: Stacy Bradshaw, a lecturer in human communication studies, plus close to 20 CSUF students and alumni will coordinate the effort. The volunteers will help unload and organize food donations brought in by truck.
Where: Orangethorpe United Methodist Church
2351 W. Orangethorpe Ave., Fullerton, 92833-4308
Background: The West Fullerton Improvement Committee has sponsored a food drive for almost two years that helps about 100 families each month. A different organization leads the event each month. Bradshaw was tapped to organize Cal State Fullerton’s efforts following her involvement in this spring’s “West Fullerton — Stories of Hope and Civic Renewal” project. The project was the focus of a spring CSUF course entitled “Communication in Community Building and Civic Engagement,” in which students explored the role of civic engagement in local communities. Students focused on West Fullerton and interviewed residents to discover obstacles to civic engagement, struggles that immigrant families face and improvements that could be beneficial to families and neighborhoods. Students presented their findings in a 20-minute video.

Bradshaw, who was a graduate student in the class, said she wanted to help Cal State Fullerton continue its efforts to reach out to the West Fullerton community. “This goes toward our university mission,” Bradshaw said. “We’re a university situated in a community, and we need to be aware of the community we live in. We don’t always have to go to far-away places to do service. We can do it right in our own backyard.”
Ahead: Cal State Fullerton will be hosting a dialogue Thursday, Oct. 20, on issues that face the West Fullerton community. The public is invited to attend the 7:30-9:30 p.m. session in the Titan Student Union. For more information, please call 657-278-4730.
