The West Fullerton Improvement Committee has sponsored
a food drive for almost two years that helps about 100
families each month. A different organization leads the
event each month. Bradshaw was tapped to organize Cal
State Fullerton’s efforts following her involvement
in this spring’s “West Fullerton — Stories
of Hope and Civic Renewal” project. The project
was the focus of a spring CSUF course entitled “Communication
in Community Building and Civic Engagement,” in
which students explored the role of civic engagement in
local communities. Students focused on West Fullerton
and interviewed residents to discover obstacles to civic
engagement, struggles that immigrant families face and
improvements that could be beneficial to families and
neighborhoods. Students presented their findings in a
20-minute video.
Bradshaw, who was a graduate student in the class, said
she wanted to help Cal State Fullerton continue its efforts
to reach out to the West Fullerton community. “This
goes toward our university mission,” Bradshaw said.
“We’re a university situated in a community,
and we need to be aware of the community we live in. We
don’t always have to go to far-away places to do
service. We can do it right in our own backyard.” |
