Background: |
Written from 1935 through 1955, Dialogues of the
Carmelites premiered in La Scala, Milan on January
26, 1957.
Dialogues of the Carmelites explores the true story of martyrdom
of 16 Carmelite nuns during the French Revolution, when the regime dissolved
all religious orders. Blanche de la Force, a timid young woman living during
the French Revolution, becomes a Carmelite nun to escape her greatest fear: death.
When the Revolution destroys her convent, Blanche runs away, but returns to join
her sisters in confronting death with courage and grace. Throughout this riveting
dramatic piece, the nuns surmount their individual fears and, in the end accept
the sacrifice they must make as the opera rises to its final scene of shattering
poignancy.
Cal State Fullerton's production, performed in two acts, will be sung
in English with projected surtitles.
Designers include Ann Sheffield, scenic design; Karen Weller costume
design; John Fisher lighting design and Rebecca Guzzi make-up design.
