Background: |
San Francisco playwright and political activist,
Joan Holden, wrote her first play for the San Francisco
Mime Troupe in the 1960s. She adapted Goldoni’s
play, L’Amant Militaire, into a satire on the
Vietnam War, and has been writing political plays ever
since.
Her drama Nickel and Dimed explores the harsh realities
of surviving in America for low-level workers who must
choose to eat or pay rent. Nickel and Dimed poses the
question: Can a middle class journalist survive in the
harsh reality of the blue-collar world, or will she
fail and never truly understand their painful way of
life?
Leading the ensemble cast, and performing in the role
of Barbara is CSUF alumna and professional actor Rita
Renee. Designers include: Robert Broadfoot—scenic
design, Abel Zeballos—make-up design, and Drew
Westphal—sound design.
The show is playing in rotating repertoire with Constance
Congdon’s Tales of the Lost Formicans.
Author Barbara Ehrenreich will visit CSUF on April
12 at 7:30 in the Titan Student Union. She will be speaking
on her book, Nickel and Dimed, and a book signing will
follow. The event is free but parking is $4. |
