Background: |
Part dream play, part science fiction farce, this
dark comedy contemplates American angst with wry wit,
power and a freshness of spirit. Tackling the American
Dream, Alzheimer’s disease and alien abduction,
Congdon studies an American family sliding into dysfunction
as seen through the eyes of time-traveling space aliens
from the future. Time Magazine writes, “If not
the best new play of recent years, certainly the most
imaginative.”
Born in Iowa, Congdon grew up in Kansas and Colorado
where she described herself as a “typical nomadic
American of the 1950s and 1960s.” Her father,
a carpenter and welder, “…had the post World
War II idea that if you work harder, things will get
better.” She dedicated this play to him, and used
her father’s struggle with Alhzheimer’s
disease in creating the character, Jim.
Cathy is played by Stephanie Carpenter, Jerry is played
by Stephen Kline, Jim is played by Lukas Bailey, and
Judy is played by Amber Kenny.
Designers are: Brandy Stiles—scenic design, Kendra
Curtis—costume design, Eric Wenzel—lighting
design, Alissa Trevino—make-up design, and John
Fisher—sound design.
The show contains mature language and sexual
situations, and is playing in rotating repertoire
with Joan Holden’s Nickel and Dimed. |
