Background: |
First produced in its final form at the Mark Taper
Forum in 1984, The American Clock captures
a family plummeting into the depths of the Great Depression.
Through the family’s struggles, myriad perspectives
are explored, as Arthur Miller bears witness to the
rise and fall of Americana.
This kaleidoscopic study of America during the early
years of the Great Depression exposes Miller’s
writing at its most personal and intimate. Born on 112th
Street in Manhattan on October 17, 1915, Miller won
the Pulitzer Prize for Death of a Salesman
in 1949 and All My Sons, View
from the Bridge, and The Crucible
are staples of the American Theatre. His second marriage
in 1956 to Marilyn Monroe ended in 1960. Harold Clurman
notes that when Miller was asked in what way his plays
were related to the events of his life, he responded,
“In a sense all my plays are autobiographical.”
Ann Sheffield is the scenic designer, Sara Lamb is
the costume designer, Devon Johnson is the lighting
designer, Leilani DiCato is the make-up designer, and
the sound designer is Sarah Scheie. |
