Cal State Fullerton Slates Events to Spotlight
Engineering and Computer Science

January 25, 2005 :: No. 117

What: High school and university students can explore engineering and computer science careers and learn more about Cal State Fullerton’s College of Engineering and Computer Science throughout the month of February during “Launch Your Future” ECS Weeks 2005.
When/Where: Feb. 15 – 25
Engineering and Computer Science Quad and other campus locations
Events: The festivities include MESA Day from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 23.

Approximately 350 students from area high schools will take part in various contests showcasing mathematics, engineering and science achievement. They include testing of balsawood gliders and bridges, a web-page design competition and judging of home-grown crystals. The CSUF MESA Program serves more than 1,400 Orange County students in grades 6-12.

Other scheduled events include an alumni mentor luncheon, career fair, student leadership day and open house (see schedule that follows).

Engineering and Computer Science Weeks 2005


Preparing for a Technical Career Fair
Tuesday, February 15
McCarthy Hall, Room 682 1-2:15 p.m.

Corporate recruiters will provide information about how to approach a career fair, how students really get hired, what recruiters look for in a resume, simple interview secrets and other strategies for making the best impression with potential employers.

Alumni Mentor Luncheon
Thursday, February 17
Golleher Alumni House Noon-2 p.m.

Co-sponsored by the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, a two-hour luncheon will be held for students and alumni. Students will have the opportunity for networking and obtaining advice about their majors and careers. Alumni will have the opportunity to mentor students and build their connections to the university.

Engineering and Computer Science Student Leadership Day
Tuesday, February 22
ECS Quad 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Cookout offers students an opportunity to learn more about student organizations, see project displays and take part in competitions.

MESA Day
Wednesday, February 23
ECS Quad, Lawn, Classrooms 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Approximately 350 students from 6 area high schools will be on campus for engineering, science, math and computer competitions in conjunction with the MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) Program's annual Engineering and Computer Science Day. The CSU Fullerton MESA Program serves over 1,400 Orange County students in grades 6 - 12. Students will test balsawood bridges, fly balsawood gliders, compete in a web-page design competition, be judged on their home-grown crystals, make technical presentations, and participate in additional competitions and activities. CSUF Engineering and Computer Science students will serve as judges and greeters and encourage younger students to consider careers in engineering and computer science.

Career Fair
Thursday, February 24
ECS Quad 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Approximately 20 employers who are seeking full-time, intern and summer employment candidates in engineering and computer science are expected at the fair. Students will have an opportunity to meet employers, submit their resumes, and learn more about the companies attending. Participating companies include: Beckman Coulter Inc., City of Stanton Public Works Department, Department of Industrial Relations, Fluor Corp., Fortress Networks, LA Department of Water and Power, Los Angeles County’s Department of Public Works, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon Co., RBF Consulting and USDA - Forest Service.

CSUF Engineering and Computer Science Open House
Friday, February 25
ECS Classrooms, Labs and Quad 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Counselors and teachers from local community colleges and high schools will learn more about Cal State Fullerton’s Engineering and Computer Science majors. Events will include presentations, tours of ECS labs, view a faculty poster session and student project displays and lunch.
